Got a Placement? 3 Reasons Why You Need to Promote It

As a singer/songwriter for 20 plus years and a music supervisor / licensing agent since 2011, I have seen first - hand the wide range of responses when I ask artists to “please promote the film they have songs in.” Some artists flat out ignore me, act as if it's no big deal, and don't even add it to their website or bio. Others give it a post, but don't go much beyond that.

Here are three reasons why you should promote your song placement in a film:

1- To Increase Your Credibility as a Songwriter/Artist - it may seem easy to get placements, but I can tell you from experience it is not! It's nice that your family and friends like your songs - and even if you have a large number of fans on social media - but this is a credit that not every songwriter or artist has. This is something to add to your bio and mention in media interviews. This sets you apart.

2. To Improve Your Music Discovery - six years ago, I had a couple of songs in the holiday film, Lucy Shimmers and The Prince of Peace. This little indie film has continued to make top rankings because it's a powerful story, and so people share it with each other. Not only did I post about it several times, I added a blog post to my website about where people can find the songs. Just last month, September 2026, it was the second highest overall referrer to my website from the search “songs from Lucy Shimmers and The Prince of Peace.” This film, six years later, still has people searching for the songs I wrote that are in it! Talk about a great advertisement!

3- To Support Your Success, and the Filmmakers Success - the more people see the film, the more money you and the filmmaker both make. I can tell you as a filmmaker myself, unless you have a major marketing budget (which indie filmmakers never have), you rely on people sharing the film with other people they believe will enjoy it. It becomes a team grassroots marketing effort - and everyone wins for every stream.

So get out there and promote the films you have songs in! It will help you as an artist more than you know. Also, go watch Lucy Shimmers - but make sure to have a box of tissue ready!
